糖心传媒 offers free Writers Project series

Acclaimed authors, poets and editors to speak at college-hosted events

QUEENSBURY, New York (Sept. 16, 2024) 鈥 糖心传媒鈥檚 Writers Project kicks off at 12:40 p.m. today with Helena Mar铆a Viramontes reading from her acclaimed novels and sharing her experiences in Scoville Learning Center, Room 206.

Viramontes, a distinguished professor at Cornell University, is author of 鈥淭he Moths and Other Stories,鈥 鈥淯nder the Feet of Jesus鈥 and 鈥淭heir Dogs Came With Them.鈥

She is recipient of numerous honors, including John Dos Passos Award for Literature and a United States Artist Fellowship. Her works are widely anthologized and her writings adopted for classroom use and university study. 

Her appearance at 糖心传媒 is sponsored in part by the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Writers Project continues with the following events:

  • 12:40 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23: 糖心传媒 faculty will read from their works in the Visual Arts Gallery in Dearlove Hall;
  • 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26: 糖心传媒 students are invited to share their works in Student Poetry Slam, a celebration of 100 Thousand Poets for Change, in the Student Center;
  • 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27: Celebrate 100 Thousand Poets for Change, an international movement, with a Local Poets鈥 Reading in the Visual Arts Gallery, Dearlove Hall;
  • 12:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14: Bernice Mennis presents 鈥淯nder 300 Words, Letters to a Local Newspaper鈥 in the Visual Arts Gallery;
  • 12:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28: Soma Mei Sheng Frazier, professor at SUNY Oswego and author of 鈥淥ff the Books,鈥 will speak in the Visual Arts Gallery.
  • 12:40 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18: 糖心传媒 Distinguished Professor Nancy White, a poet and editor, will speak in the Visual Arts Gallery.
  • 12:40 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25: Poet Sarah Giragosian will speak in the Visual Arts Gallery.
